De prime abord, la standardisation y est associ\u00e9e \u00e0 une entrave \u00e0 la cr\u00e9ativit\u00e9 et \u00e0 la libert\u00e9 d\u2019entreprendre. C\u2019est d\u2019autant plus paradoxal que la standardisation constitue le socle de l\u2019am\u00e9lioration continue, tout comme l\u2019innovation. En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, ce qui est en cause se situe sur un autre plan : celui du cadre dans lequel l\u2019am\u00e9lioration s\u2019inscrit.<\/p>\n<p>Avant d\u2019aller plus loin, il est n\u00e9cessaire de se pencher davantage sur ce dont on parle. Tout d\u2019abord, le standard se d\u00e9finit comme la meilleure mani\u00e8re de faire connue \u00e0 ce jour. Il est dynamique, dans la mesure o\u00f9 il est appel\u00e9 \u00e0 \u00e9voluer le jour o\u00f9 une meilleure mani\u00e8re de faire \u00e9mergera, et ce, que ce soit dans trois jours comme dans cinq ans. Les autres caract\u00e9ristiques du standard sont : qu\u2019il \u00e9mane des parties prenantes, qu\u2019il provient d\u2019observations du terrain, qu\u2019il est mis en \u0153uvre par l\u2019exp\u00e9rimentation de mani\u00e8re incr\u00e9mentale, et enfin, qu\u2019il est toujours au service du client.<\/p>\n<p>Ce n\u2019est donc pas \u00ab je d\u00e9cide de faire mon standard au gr\u00e9 de mes envies ou de mes inspirations \u00bb, mais \u00ab je suis le standard en place, pour lequel j\u2019ai \u00e9t\u00e9 partie prenante, jusqu\u2019\u00e0 ce que nous d\u00e9cidions collectivement de le changer pour une meilleure mani\u00e8re de faire \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>La standardisation s\u2019inscrit donc dans un cadre collectif. Pour caricaturer un peu, je dirais que le moteur de l\u2019innovation individuelle est de se distinguer des autres, de ses coll\u00e8gues \u2013 et c\u2019est tout \u00e0 fait l\u00e9gitime \u2013 alors que dans le cadre de l\u2019innovation collective, le moteur est de se distinguer et de surpasser la comp\u00e9tition.<\/p>\n<p>Mais de quoi a-t-on besoin dans un processus de cr\u00e9ation collectif ? Cela n\u00e9cessite d\u2019abord un langage commun et partag\u00e9 (les standards) entre les \u00e9quipes. Cela n\u00e9cessite ensuite des paliers temporels, autrement dit, des espace-temps durant lesquels on va pouvoir tester ces nouveaux standards.<\/p>\n<p>En r\u00e9alit\u00e9, standardisation et innovation ne s\u2019opposent pas. Ils sont m\u00eame compl\u00e9mentaires, et ils constituent les deux p\u00f4les de l\u2019am\u00e9lioration continue, \u00e0 l\u2019image d\u2019une pi\u00e8ce de monnaie dont l\u2019une des faces n\u2019existe pas sans sa face oppos\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Individualisme versus collectivisme<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cette dimension refl\u00e8te l\u2019\u00e9tendue, le degr\u00e9 et la nature des liens entre l\u2019individu et les membres du groupe. Elle fait r\u00e9f\u00e9rence au concept d\u2019identit\u00e9, qui se forme dans la relation aux autres.<\/p>\n<p>Au sein des cultures dites \u00ab collectivistes \u00bb, les personnes existent au travers de leur appartenance \u00e0 une communaut\u00e9, de sorte que les int\u00e9r\u00eats du groupe passent avant les int\u00e9r\u00eats personnels de ses membres. Cette orientation se r\u00e9f\u00e8re \u00e0 une soci\u00e9t\u00e9 dans laquelle les gens sont int\u00e9gr\u00e9s, d\u00e8s leur naissance, \u00e0 une communaut\u00e9 d\u2019appartenance. Dans ces cultures, l\u2019harmonie sociale passe avant l\u2019ind\u00e9pendance et l\u2019expression individuelle. La citation suivante de Confucius illustre comment les individus investissent ces r\u00f4les qui leur sont attribu\u00e9s : \u00ab <em>Je suis la totalit\u00e9 des r\u00f4les que je vis par rapport \u00e0 un autre sp\u00e9cifique\u2026 Pris collectivement, ils [ces r\u00f4les] tissent pour chacun de nous un motif d&#8217;identit\u00e9 personnelle unique, de telle sorte que si certains de mes r\u00f4les changent, les autres changeront n\u00e9cessairement et feront de moi une personne diff\u00e9rente<\/em>. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Vous avez peut-\u00eatre d\u00e9j\u00e0 entendu l\u2019anecdote du Japonais qui se pr\u00e9sente et commence par donner le nom de l\u2019entreprise ou de l\u2019institution qu\u2019il repr\u00e9sente. Il poursuit en nommant son d\u00e9partement, puis sa position, et il finit par donner son nom. Au Japon, chaque personne existe par rapport aux autres. D\u2019ailleurs, il existe trois mani\u00e8res diff\u00e9rentes de dire \u00ab je \u00bb : Watashi (\u79c1), Boku (\u50d5) ou Ore (\u4ffa). Le choix du pronom se fait en fonction du contexte de la conversation et de son interlocuteur.<\/p>\n<p>Pour ma part, je ne me pr\u00e9sente jamais en parlant des autres. Je parle d\u2019abord de ce qui me caract\u00e9rise, de ce que je fais ou de ce que j\u2019ai (le titre de mon poste professionnel notamment), car je suis issue d\u2019une culture individualiste, c\u2019est le cas pour l\u2019ensemble des cultures occidentales, o\u00f9 le degr\u00e9 d\u2019attachement \u00e0 un groupe est bien plus faible, et o\u00f9 l&#8217;\u00e9panouissement, la libert\u00e9 et le bien-\u00eatre personnel pr\u00e9valent sur le groupe. Cette construction identitaire est le fruit de la philosophie grecque, pr\u00f4nant l\u2019id\u00e9al d\u2019un individu libre : ma\u00eetre de sa vie et de ses choix. Il en d\u00e9coule une identit\u00e9 plus ind\u00e9pendante des autres.<\/p>\n<p><strong>De l\u2019organigramme au diagramme de flux<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Le Lean a donc vu le jour au Japon, au sein d\u2019une culture collectiviste o\u00f9 l\u2019on s\u2019identifie par rapport \u00e0 ses diff\u00e9rents r\u00f4les. \u00c0 la lumi\u00e8re de ces \u00e9l\u00e9ments, on peut mieux appr\u00e9hender le r\u00f4le central que joue le diagramme de flux dans le Lean. Alors que les individus issus de cultures occidentales vont se tourner vers l\u2019organigramme pour s\u2019identifier dans leur r\u00f4le, ce centre de gravit\u00e9 va se d\u00e9placer vers le diagramme de flux dans le Lean. Il s\u2019agit moins d\u2019identifier les personnes \u00e0 travers le titre de leur fonction qu\u2019\u00e0 travers leur r\u00f4le, en lien avec les autres, dans la cha\u00eene de valeur.<\/p>\n<p>C\u2019est ce que Virassack, jeune planificateur, d\u00e9couvrit rapidement chez Toyota Motors Europe. D\u00e8s son arriv\u00e9e, il rejoignit le d\u00e9partement de gestion de la cha\u00eene d\u2019approvisionnement et s\u2019attela consciencieusement \u00e0 ses nouvelles fonctions. Quelques semaines d&#8217;int\u00e9gration et d&#8217;apprentissage intense plus tard, Virassack fut convi\u00e9 \u00e0 un d\u00e9jeuner en t\u00eate-\u00e0-t\u00eate avec le Vice-pr\u00e9sident de Toyota Motor Europe de l\u2019\u00e9poque : Mr. Tadashi Arashima. Se sentant \u00e0 la fois honor\u00e9 et nerveux, il n&#8217;avait aucune id\u00e9e de ce dont ils allaient parler.<\/p>\n<p>Virassack tenta de faire bonne figure durant le trajet en voiture qui les mena au restaurant. Bien que Monsieur Arashima bris\u00e2t la glace pour le mettre \u00e0 l\u2019aise, l&#8217;id\u00e9e de discuter avec une figure aussi \u00e9minente le mettait quelque peu mal \u00e0 l&#8217;aise. Arriv\u00e9s au restaurant, ils continu\u00e8rent \u00e0 aborder des sujets g\u00e9n\u00e9raux jusqu&#8217;\u00e0 ce que Tadashi Arashima lui posa une question qui allait profond\u00e9ment marquer Virassack : \u00ab Savez-vous pourquoi votre r\u00f4le est important, pourquoi vous \u00eates ici et comment vous allez contribuer \u00e0 l\u2019organisation ? \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Surpris par la question directe, Virassack r\u00e9pondit qu&#8217;il pensait que son travail consistait principalement \u00e0 g\u00e9rer des donn\u00e9es et \u00e0 \u00e9tablir des fichiers de plannings sans erreurs. Avec le recul, il sourit en se souvenant de sa r\u00e9ponse na\u00efve, mais \u00e0 ce moment-l\u00e0, il croyait vraiment que c&#8217;\u00e9tait la bonne r\u00e9ponse. Mr. Arashima, avec bienveillance, lui expliqua que la planification chez Toyota est bien plus qu\u2019une simple t\u00e2che administrative. \u00ab La planification est une activit\u00e9 strat\u00e9gique chez Toyota \u00bb, lui dit-il. \u00ab Chaque chiffre que vous introduisez dans nos syst\u00e8mes n&#8217;est pas simplement un nombre, mais un engagement. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Virassack \u00e9coutait attentivement, comprenant peu \u00e0 peu l&#8217;ampleur de ses responsabilit\u00e9s. Arashima continua : \u00ab Vos estimations et vos plannings contribuent directement aux d\u00e9cisions de la direction. Votre travail a un impact r\u00e9el sur l\u2019ensemble de notre cha\u00eene d\u2019approvisionnement et, par extension, sur notre succ\u00e8s global. \u00bb<\/p>\n<p>Ce moment fut une r\u00e9v\u00e9lation pour Virassack. Il r\u00e9alisa que chaque employ\u00e9, au travers de son r\u00f4le, constituait un rouage essentiel dans la machine. Chaque t\u00e2che, aussi insignifiante qu\u2019elle puisse para\u00eetre, avait son importance dans l&#8217;ensemble. Cette prise de conscience transforma sa vision de son travail.
